Kolekcija VALVASOR

At the Notranjska Museum Postojna, the permanent exhibition features a large portrait of Johann Weikhard von Valvasor (1641–1693). He was a man of broad education, a polymath who dedicated most of his life to science, collecting, and the study of Carniola, the central part of present-day Slovenia. Through his research and systematic documentation of the karst underground world, he came to be regarded as one of the greatest experts on caves of his time. For this reason, he is considered today to be the world’s first speleologist and the first cave explorer.
In his extensive work The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, which contains 528 illustrations drawn by Valvasor himself, he consistently employed Slovene place names and expressions alongside German. In doing so, he helped to preserve a significant part of Slovenia’s cultural heritage.
As the museum houses the permanent Karst Museum exhibition, and since Valvasor is recognised as the world’s first cave explorer, we have dedicated a special collection to him in our online shop.
